To prevent carpal tunnel syndrome we have to understand exactly what carpel tunnel is. First of all carpal tunnel is a common condition that seems to affect women more then men, although it can affect both male and female. This condition attacks the wrist and hand. There is a nerve in the wrist that can become compressed. When this happens, the nerve causes pain, or maybe a tingling feeling, or a burning feeling. Sometimes it will make one feel as though they have no strength in their hand or wrist. Sometimes this pain can radiate up the arm and or into the shoulder area.
The causes of carpal tunnel syndrome can be because of some trauma to the hand or wrist. Rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes is just a couple of things that can bring about carpal tunnel. Any repetitive action of the hands and wrist, such as computer work or writing, every day over years can bring about carpal tunnel. Large machinery such as constant use of a jack hammer can bring about carpal tunnel.
Treatment is simple. A splint on the wrist, a steroid injection at the site and or a wrist support is helpful, especially so if worn at night. Someone with carpal tunnel may complain of increased tingling and pain during the night and this may awaken them. As a last resort the person may speak to their doctor regarding a surgical procedure to relieve pain.
The likelihood of someone developing carpal tunnel syndrome is small if they do not repeatedly put stress on their hands and wrists every day. If constant use of the wrist and hands are part of someone’s job and livelihood then extra care should be taken to wear wrist supports or special gloves to help cushion shock to the hands and wrist.
