There are 2 important reason why one develops or keeps RSI complaints:

Posture

When the back of your chair is too far backwards, you will probably lean backwards often. This induces extra tension in the muscles of the neck and arm. Also if the distance to the desk is too much, problems may arise.

The position of the hands, relative to the keyboard can cause problems to the wrists (See The optimal posture).

Excessive computer use

When you face a deadline, or when you have a serious backlog, you will probably work hard and nonstop. Pauses are skipped and mild problems are accepted as penalty. Often, working under pressure causes a more tens posture. If such a situation is not an exception but a rule, RSI may progress to the next phase.

Research has shown that repetitive movements for a long duration causes a reduction in accuracy. To compensate, one has to put in (even) more effort, increasing the risk of RSI.
